NYで働くママ / A Working Mom in NY

When on the subject of working moms, I always think about a friend who lives in New York. I have known her for a long time. This is courtesy of her husband who is an old family friend and is like my younger brother. This “brother” began dating her during the summer that he lived with us as a graduate student, so my husband and I pride ourselves as being one of the first to know of their budding romance.

Currently, she is a Senior Vice President for the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (www.sloan.org). After graduating from Yale University, she worked in the corporate world for a while, but realized that it was the non-profit sector in which she wanted to work, so made a switch about 12 years ago.

After working for a couple of non-profit organizations, she began this position two years ago. The Sloan Foundation was founded in 1934 by Alfred P. Sloan Jr., then-President of General Motors and makes grants to support original research and education in the field of science, technology, and economic performance and to improve the quality of American life.  They have an asset of $1.7 billion and gave away $85 million in grants last year. Being responsible for the operational and financial aspect of this organization is a huge responsibility. And to think she is only in her forties!

We recently had a chance to have dinner and talked about her life and family. She explained to me that the guiding principle throughout her life was instilled by her father; that is, the importance of being independent. For my friend, working is a way of ensuring this independence. She says that she has been blessed in meeting her husband and having children along the way but this principle remains unaltered.

As for balancing family and work, she told me that it was chaotic while the children were young and did occasionally put strains on the marriage. However, because they were so busy trying to get everything done, she had no time to worry about the small stuff and the children just grew up. “When my daughters were small, what I wanted was time to focus on work. Now that they are self-sufficient and I have more time, they are too busy with their lives for me. How ironic is that!”

Long time ago, an older friend told me I would meet amazing people who make their life seem easy, though in fact they work really hard behind the scene. They just don’t make a big deal out of all the effort, she said. I always remember this when I think of her.

The Prospect School - Learning With a Difference

One of the things that I admire most about America is its willingness to accept the difference in people. I think this is most prevalent in the area of education where differences in the way children learn is acknowledged and solutions are actively provided. I had a chance to visit such a school and to speak to the school psychologist who is part of the management team and responsible for its curriculum..

The Prospect School in Danbury, CT is a school that serves children with diagnosed learning difference between the ages of 7 – 14. It is a new division of the neighboring Wooster School, an independent school for students from PreK to 12th grade and opened its doors last September with two students. (theprospectschool.org)

She spoke to me about the curriculum which is individually tailored to meet each student’s needs. It is a “collaborative” effort between the administrators, therapists and teachers. The teachers who instruct these students on a day to day basis are continually trained so they have the all the necessary and updated tools to guide the students

Her interest in this field began while helping her sister who had a learning difference. She obtained her PhD in school psychology and after working in several schools, went into private practice with her father-in-law and husband. She believes that early intervention is imperative to avoid the emotional challenges that arise when differences are neither diagnosed nor addressed, such as low self-esteem, anxiety and a feeling of helplessness. These emotional/behavioral issues are far more difficult to reverse, once they are formed.

This topic is personally poignant because both my husband and my son had learning differences as young children. I believe that they would not be the self-assured and optimistic men that they are today if these differences weren’t addressed at a relatively young age. I am very thankful for this.

What makes schools like this and the people who work in this field special is that they make us accept the fact that everyone processes the world differently yet we all have potential worth discovering. This belief is something from which we can all learn and emulate.

SPICE RACKポットラック no.3 / SPICE RACK Potluck no.3

New Spices: Yumi (left) and Noriko (middle)

Potluck no.3.
One of my favorite parts of presiding over Spice Rack is the chance to meet with the Spices. Despite the differences in the areas of work and the years since we began, we are all our own bosses, which means that the buck stops with us. Each Spice has her own business issues to face and to figure out. But until we make the final decision, it is nice to have people who will listen so you can organize your thoughts and to give you constructive opinions. I hope the Potluck provides that kind of opportunity for comradery.

This time the participants were Kumiko Hitomi (HI Company, Ltd.), a newcomer to Potluck, two NEW Spices Yumi Asaga (S.BUGI) and Noriko Oonishi (Patisserie COROCO), Sachi Doi (mion / SACHi DOi DESiGN), a regular, and the Spice Rack Team.

Spice Rack will be introducing more new Spices, new business ventures and collaborative projects from the Spices. Lots to look forward to!

Bringing and sharing food and ideas. What can be better?

日本YWCA / YWCA of Japan

President  YWCA of Japan

(http://www.ywca.or.jp/home.html)

Pamphlets

Last week, I went to see my cousin who is the President of YWCA Japan. I had always assumed that YWCA was the sister-version of YMCA which became a household name, courtesy of the Village People. When she told me its main function was to support the health and empowerment of women in disadvantaged situations, I realized that many people, including myself, had little knowledge of its workings.

In Japan there are 26 YWCAs which offer a variety of programs to assist women live in good health and safety. Programs include support after breast cancer operation, education on HIV/AIDS and DV hotline. YMCA Japan’s function is to coordinate all these local activities. As for funding for the programs, they first establish an objective for each program, evaluate it for sustainability and future prospects, then apply for grants. Currently there are about 3,000 members in Japan. (http://www.ywca.or.jp/home.html)

My cousin is by far the youngest president since its establishment in Japan in 1905. She modestly states that this is because there were no other candidates who were older, but after hearing her story, I believe otherwise. Her involvement with YWCA goes back to junior high school when she began to volunteer as an extra-curricular activity She says she enjoyed being useful to someone as well as being part of a supportive community.

After college, she worked in the corporate world for a while. Realizing that this was not what she wanted to do, she began to work professionally at the YWCA, working hard on programs in support of Cambodia and the Great Hanshin Earthquake. However, due to a culmination of stress both physically and emotionally, she became ill in her early 30s and had to resign from her position at YWCA to rehabilitate at home.

“I was so busy trying to live up to other people’s expectations that I was never satisfied with myself. This became a source of my stress”, she told me honestly. However she also said that “it gave me a chance to really think about myself.” She continued to participate at the YWCA in her own capacity.

Nowadays, she leads an interesting life where she works at a local grocery store in the morning, then devotes the rest of the time at YWCA. “It is because I get up early and do physical work that I can concentrate on my work at YWCA the rest of the time. I need this balance, though I know this lifestyle is possible due to the understanding and support of my staff.”

After speaking with her, I understand that it is because she knows what it feels like to be vulnerable, and has the ability to overcome this vulnerability, that she can appropriately represent this organization.
