プロスペクト・スクール - 学び方の違いを尊重する / The Prospect School - Learning With a Difference

私がアメリカを好きな理由のひとつは、この国が人の「違い」に対して寛容だからである。特に教育においては、子供は一人ひとり学び方が異なることを当然と受けとめており、その生徒たちのために特別な教育課程が用意されている。先週そのような学校に行き、そこの経営に携わり、カリキュラムを決める女性に会ってきた。

家から運転して5分のところにあるプロスペクト・スクールは7歳から14歳の学習障害を持つ子供たちのための学校である。去年9月に隣接する私立学校のウースター・スクール(プリスクール～高校)の新しい部として設立され、現在2人の生徒がいる。(theprospectschool.org)

心理学者の彼女によると、この学校の教科課程は生徒のニーズに合わせて個別に組み立てられる。学校の管理者、理学・作業療法士と先生たちがコラボして、生徒一人ひとりのプログラムを作っていく。また、日々生徒たちを指導する先生たちには必要な技術や最新のメソッドのトレーニングを受けさせている。

彼女がこの分野に興味を持ったきっかけは、学習障害を持つ妹に勉強を教えていたことである。学校専属の心理学で博士号を取得し、数校で心理カウンセラーとして働いた後、同業の義父のクリニックで、夫とともに働いている。

彼女曰く、学習障害の一番の危険性は、発覚が遅かったり、解決策を見いだせなかった場合に起きうる感情的な問題、例えば自己評価が低いとか、過剰に心配したり、絶望的な気持ちになることである。感情や行動に影響が出始めると解決方法はより複雑になる。学習障害を持つ子供たちに早めにトレーニングを受けさせることによって、このような問題を避けることができると言う。

私が個人的にこのテーマに対して思い入れがあるのは、夫も息子も幼少期に学習障害がわかり、それを克服した経験があるから。2人とも今は前向きな、大らかな男性だが、それは、小さい頃に学習障害と診断され、対応策が見つかったらからだと思う。それはとてもありがたいことだ。

このような学校とこの分野で働く人たちは、人間は個々のやり方で情報をプロセスし、その個性に価値があることを教えてくれる。私たちみんな、この信念から学び、見習うことができるのではないだろうか。

One of the things that I admire most about America is its willingness to accept the difference in people. I think this is most prevalent in the area of education where differences in the way children learn is acknowledged and solutions are actively provided. I had a chance to visit such a school and to speak to the school psychologist who is part of the management team and responsible for its curriculum..

The Prospect School in Danbury, CT is a school that serves children with diagnosed learning difference between the ages of 7 – 14. It is a new division of the neighboring Wooster School, an independent school for students from PreK to 12^th grade and opened its doors last September with two students. (theprospectschool.org)

She spoke to me about the curriculum which is individually tailored to meet each student’s needs. It is a “collaborative” effort between the administrators, therapists and teachers. The teachers who instruct these students on a day to day basis are continually trained so they have the all the necessary and updated tools to guide the students

Her interest in this field began while helping her sister who had a learning difference. She obtained her PhD in school psychology and after working in several schools, went into private practice with her father-in-law and husband. She believes that early intervention is imperative to avoid the emotional challenges that arise when differences are neither diagnosed nor addressed, such as low self-esteem, anxiety and a feeling of helplessness. These emotional/behavioral issues are far more difficult to reverse, once they are formed.

This topic is personally poignant because both my husband and my son had learning differences as young children. I believe that they would not be the self-assured and optimistic men that they are today if these differences weren’t addressed at a relatively young age. I am very thankful for this.

What makes schools like this and the people who work in this field special is that they make us accept the fact that everyone processes the world differently yet we all have potential worth discovering. This belief is something from which we can all learn and emulate.
